9. Is There A Doctor In The House?

Continuing with our theme of "genealogy is where you find it," researchers might want to check out two good databases on the Indiana University Medical Library webpages. The Medical Library, located here in Indy on the campus of IUPUI, has the databases online at
Titled "19th-20th Century Indiana Physicians Biographical Database" and "Union Civil War Physicians," the databases can be searched individually or together. Some entries are quite extensive, running to hundreds of words and a dozen or more data fields, others are rather perfunctory.
Librarian Nancy Eckerman and her staff including volunteers have amassed an impressive group of files on early Hoosier doctors. The databases continue to be supported and grown as new information comes to light, so, if your census search indicates a physician or two in the family, plan a visit to this good resource.
